Cleaning Products Compatibility

Use one cleaning product at a time. Mixing common cleaners can create toxic gases or damage surfaces.

Safety first

Combinations to Never Mix

Bleach + ammonia

Can release chloramine gases. Ammonia may be in glass cleaners, some bathroom cleaners, and urine residue.

Bleach + vinegar or acids

Can release chlorine gas. Acids include vinegar, lemon juice, toilet cleaners, limescale removers, and some rust removers.

Bleach + rubbing alcohol

Can create hazardous fumes including chloroform-like compounds. Keep alcohol disinfectants separate from bleach.

Vinegar + hydrogen peroxide

Can form peracetic acid, an irritating corrosive mixture. Use them separately and rinse between uses.

Drain cleaner + anything

Drain products can react violently with other cleaners or each other. Never layer different drain cleaners.

Different branded cleaners

Unless the labels explicitly say to combine them, do not mix. More products does not mean more cleaning power.

Safe Surface Guide

Most counters

Use warm water and dish soap first. Use stone-safe cleaner for granite, marble, quartzite, and sealed stone.

Glass and mirrors

Use glass cleaner or diluted vinegar if the frame and surrounding surfaces tolerate it.

Stainless steel

Use dish soap and water or stainless cleaner. Wipe with the grain and dry to prevent spots.

Natural stone

Avoid vinegar, lemon, abrasive powder, and bleach unless the stone product label specifically allows it.

Wood

Avoid soaking. Use a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry quickly.

Screens and electronics

Use a dry microfiber cloth or screen-safe cleaner. Avoid vinegar, ammonia, and overspraying.
